10 members of same family killed in South Africa mass shooting

Police have revealed that on April 21 in the city of Pietermaritzburg in the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) province of South Africa, gunmen killed ten members of the same family, including seven women and three men.

A 13-year-old boy was one of the victims, according to the police.

According to a statement released on Friday, April 21, the South African Ministry of Police stated, “According to initial police reports, unknown gunmen stormed a Pietermaritzburg homestead and ambushed the family.”

Several mass shootings have rocked South Africa in recent months, some of which are attributed to taxi business violence and others to drug cartels. Ten members of the same family were killed in one of the shootings.

Twelve people had been identified as dead when police arrived on the scene. The area’s mayor told the media that they needed to increase the number of police stations in the area. Eleven more people were taken to the hospital with injuries, but two of them later passed away, bringing the death toll to 14.

Public police representative Athlenda Mathe said;

“Two suspects have been arrested; one has passed away, and the other has fled the scene.” She added, “Police are on a manhunt” and that three guns were taken from the suspects during a shootout.
